Mission Statement for HEIC at Johns Hopkins

To support the Johns Hopkins’ health system mission of research, teaching, and patient care; to promote patient safety by reducing the risk of acquiring and transmitting infections; and to become a leader in health care epidemiology and infection control.

Department Functions at The Johns Hopkins Hospital:

Surveillance, Prevention, and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections & Resistant Organisms

  • Investigate and control hospital outbreaks and infection clusters among patients and personnel
  • Develop and maintain infection control policies and procedures for all hospital departments
  • Manage antimicrobial use
  • Develop novel stratigies to survey for healthcare associated infections

Continuing Education and Other Training

  • Educational programs to assure quality of patient care
  • Nursing Unit In-Services
  • Healthcare Associated Infections (School of Hygiene and Public Health, JHU)
  • New Employee Orientation (Nursing and Hospital)
  • Annual 3-day "Fellows Course" Infectious Disease Conference
  • Annual 1-day MICN Conference
  • Other Department Functions
  • Measure the incidence of infections and pathogenic organisms
  • Monitor antimicrobial susceptibilites
  • Analyze temporal trends of aggregated data
  • Evaluate new products to be used to control infection throughout the hospital
  • Provide data and statistical analysis for research and publications
