General Recommendations for Prevention of Nosocomial Aspergillosis

Ventilation

  • HEPA  filtration or Laminar air-flow
  • Maintain appropriate pressure relationships
  • Check window seals, stairwells,  vents,  ducts

Environment

  • Eliminate carpet and other sources of dust
  • Avoid dust generating activities (wet mopping, HEPA vacuuming)
  • Eliminate flowers, potted ornamental plants
  • Keep windows closed
  • Develop and maintain strict cleaning procedures

Personal Hygiene

  • Masks (95) when out of protected environment
  • Consider other protective environments (mobile tents)
  • Avoid unprocessed food

Construction

  • Develop policy for construction and renovation
  • Seal off construction areas
  • Treat fireproofing with fungicide (copper-8-quinonolate)
  • Assure filters properly sealed in new buildings
  • Minimize patient exposure to high risk activities

Surveillance

  • Define disease and find cases of nosocomial infection
  • Monitor air and/or environment for aspergillus species if
    suspected nosocomial infections occur
