Environmental Services Standards for High Risk Areas for Patients Undergoing Bone Marrow Transplantation
Activity | - An Oncology patient room, must be terminally cleaned (whether occupied or vacant)
- Use thorough cleaning procedures to ensure daily decontamination and cleanliness of the room
- Using approved solutions, remove fingerprints and smudges from light switches, door frames, walls, window sills, and glass. Spray the solution on the cleaning cloth or carefully on the wall surface to prevent exposure.

| Waste Removal | Put on gloves, grasp the liner twist and tie closed.
Remove the liner from the basket and replace with a new liner.
Place the waste in a trash cart approved by infection control. Wash hands thoroughly again and put on new gloves.

Sanitation | Carry all supplies needed into room. Make up fresh germicidal solution in the one gallon pail and in the mop bucket for each room.
Begin sanitizing the room.
Work in a counter clockwise direction around the sanitized surfaces above and below shoulder height.
Move personal belongings temporarily to clean surface areas.
Clean all surfaces including bed side rails, headboard, footboard, and nurse call control. (if discharge also clean frame, springs, and wheels). Clean ledges, over bed tables, desk tops, telephone (receiver, cord, base, and dial pad), chairs, furniture, door frames and closet bureau outside and top only if room is occupied and entire unit including top if room is a discharge. If the overhead light is surface mounted rather than recessed, wipe with a damp cloth and germicidal solution. Clean vents and hard to reach areas with a wall mop treated with germicidal solution.
Sanitize the floor by wet mopping with an approved solution. Start at the far end of the room and work toward the door. Mop around edges of the floor, being careful to remove any dirt from the corners. Mop the reminder of the floor, avoid splashing walls and baseboards.
Change mops between each patient room.

Restock Supplies and Inspect Room | Wash hands thoroughly again and put on new gloves. Replace soap and paper products in restroom and at the sink. If a discharge, make the patient bed according to discharge procedures. Area Cleaner inspects room to see that all steps have been covered and the room meets their approval
Notify nursing manager and maintenance of leaks, wet dry wall, or water damage

Cleaning Bathroom | Using an approved solution, wipe down surfaces, lower ledges, and pipes of the sink. For more aggressive sink cleaning, use a scouring cleanser to remove soil or stain build up. Clean the mirror with glass cleaner and wipe dry with paper towels. Thoroughly clean all ceiling vent’s shelves, cabinets and waste baskets with germicide.
Pay special attention to corners, soap dish and drain in showers and sinks. Sanitize the shower with germicide and a cleaning cloth. Wipe the ceramic tile to prevent a soap buildup. Check the shower curtain for possible replacement. Clean inside toilet bowel with an approved cleanser and clean the outer bowl with an approved germicidal solution. Sanitize the inside of the toilet and urinal using a bowl mop saturated with germicide solution. The bowl mop should be worked around, making sure to get into the upper and lower ledges. Accidental spills can be cleaned up by flushing with water and wiping the surface dry. The outside surface of the toilet is sanitized by applying germicide on a cleaning cloth and wiping the external surface of the fixture.
