Valproate and Neuroprotection in Aortic Surgery

Summary of Trial: 

The purpose of this study is to determine if valproate, which has been demonstrated to be neuroprotective in a canine model of hypothermic circulatory arrest, can be safely used as a neuroprotective agent intraoperatively in humans.

Inclusions:
  • Patients having aortic surgery, to include aortic root replacements, aortic aneurysm repair, valve sparing aortic root surgery
  • Concomitant cardiac surgery is allowed
  • Adult patients

Exclusions: 

  • Patients with any abnormal liver function or thrombocytopenia prior to surgery
  • History of a seizure disorder or who is taking anti-seizure meds
  • Known drug allergy to valproate sodium or taking valproate now
  • Acute stroke preoperatively
  • Individuals taking Lamotrigine
