Maintaining a Healthy Mind as You Age

Overview

It’s normal to experience some degree of mental decline with age, but there are ways to proactively stave off memory lapses, and more seriously, dementia. Experts suggest that older adults can improve their chances of maintaining a healthy mind by managing health problems, exercising daily, eating a healthy diet, getting plenty of sleep, learning new things and staying socially engaged.

It’s also important to understand potential risk factors for cognitive decline—for example, research shows connections between brain health and gastrointestinal conditions, high blood pressure and hearing loss.

Be sure to discuss any concerns with your health care provider and ask about specific lifestyle changes that can help your mind stay strong.
