Getting to the East Baltimore Campus

Biking/Walking

Some students who live in nearby neighborhoods elect to walk or ride a bike to campus. Bike racks are available on campus, and two of the largest racks are located in the Rutland Street breezeway and outside the Preclinical Teaching Building. In order to ensure the safety of your bicycle, remember to secure it to the bike rack, secure removable parts, engrave the bicycle, and keep purchase and identifying information from the bicycle. In order to ensure your own safety, you should make sure that you have reflectors/lights on your bicycle, follow traffic laws, and wear a helmet (However, helmets are not required by MD law for those over age 16). More information on bicycle security, laws, and safety can be found on the MD State Highway Administration website.

If you live close enough to campus to walk or if you must walk around campus at night, please exercise safety precautions and common sense. There is a 24 hour/7 day a week escort service available from JHMI Corporate Security by calling 410-955-5585. Keep in mind that the escort service will only accompany to you the boundaries of campus. The links below provide useful information for being safe while walking around campus and the surrounding neighborhood as well as more information on the escort services provided by Corporate Security.

JHMI Sponsored Shuttles

Several shuttles are provided free of charge by JHU and JHMI. The most popular is the Homewood-JHMI shuttle which runs from the Homewood campus to JHMI with stops in Charles Village, Penn Station, and Mt. Vernon. There are also shuttles that run to Patterson Park, Bond Street Wharf, Green Spring Station, Mt. Washington, and other JHU/JHMI campuses including Bayview, Eastern High School, and Church Home. For a full listing of shuttles, schedules and maps, please follow the links below.

Public Transportation

Baltimore has a well-developed public transit system which includes buses, a subway line, light rail, and commuter trains. This option is often overlooked; however, JHMI is a major employer in the Baltimore area, and MTA provides numerous transportation options to the East Baltimore campus. All information providing information on MD/Baltimore Public Transportation can be found at the Maryland Transit Administration Website. Below are brief descriptions of four options available to get you to campus via public transportation.

  • Metro - The metro subway runs from Owings Mills Mall, through downtown Baltimore, and ends at the hospital below Broadway. This is a great option if you live in the Northwest suburbs of Baltimore.
  • Light Rail - The light rail runs from Hunt Valley south to the BWI Airport. One can take the light rail into the city and then connect to the JHMI-Homewood Shuttle at Penn Station.
  • MARC train - The MARC train runs from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore. You can ride to Penn Station and then take the JHMI-Homewood Shuttle to campus.
  • Bus - The bus system has local lines that run to JHMI including routes from Canton, Fells Point, and Patterson Park as well as several express lines that run from commuter lots in the suburbs.

If you elect to take public transportation, subsidized student passes for all buses, light rail, and subway are available for $20 per month in the business office in BRB 131. Fare information is available at the Maryland Transit Administration Website. Alternatively, you can also obtain a discounted MARC train pass. This discount for students is 15%; however, these passes are not available through the business office. MARC monthly passes are valid for MTA buses, light rail and subway lines so you don't have to purchase a MARC pass and an MTA pass.

Driving to Campus

If you are unable to bike, walk, or take public transportation to campus, there are parking options for drivers. The following section provides information on subsidized and non-subsidized on-site parking, commuter parking lots, and street parking.

Commuter Parking Lots

Two satellite lots are available, and parking is fully subsidized for students. The lots are fenced, and frequent shuttle service is provided from the lots to JHMI. For space in a satellite lot, go directly to the business office (BRB 131). Be aware that these lots are not open 24 hours or on weekends. The hours for the lots are 6:00am - 10:00pm Monday through Friday. If you plan to stay later than 10:00pm, you may move your car to a garage on campus (see After Hours Parking below). The schedules for the shuttles to and from the lots can be found on the JHMI Corporate Security Parking Website.

  • Monument Lot - This lot is located at 3700 East Monument Street, about 1.3 miles East of JHMI. This lot is convenient for drivers coming from I-95. Space is always available in this lot. A $20 refundable deposit is required for a lot pass.
  • Fallsway Lot - This lot is located at 545 N. High Street, west of JHMI and is convenient to I-83. Space is limited, and you may have to wait for a spot in this lot.
Subsidized On-Site Parking

A limited number of subsidized garage spaces are provided for graduate students in the School of Medicine. The majority of the fee is paid by the administration, but the balance of $55 per month must be paid by the student and will be automatically deducted from your paycheck ($27.50 per check). In order to apply for a subsidized parking space, please follow the directions below.

1. Email the GSA Parking Representative at gsaparking@jhmi.edu. You cannot obtain on-site subsidized parking by going to the parking office.
2. Include the following information in the email: your name, JHMI e-mail address, graduate program, and badge number (from the front of your Hopkins ID).
3. Indicate your preference for Washington Street or Caroline Street garage. If you only wish to be considered for a space in one garage, only select that garage. If you would like the first available space, list both garages in order of your preference. You are not allowed to transfer between garages once assigned a subsidized spot.

Caroline Street Garage - This garage is on the west side of campus near CRB/CRB2 and is open 24 hours Monday-Friday, but is closed Saturday and Sunday.
Washington Street Garage - This garage is at the corner of Monument and Washington streets near PCTB and is open from 6AM to midnight M-F and 7AM-7PM weekends and holidays.

There is currently a wait list for subsidized on-site parking. The wait list is displayed below. All subsidized spaces are currently full, and the waiting time for a subsidized spot can range from a month to more than a year. The wait list is established in the order in which applications are received. There is a single wait list for all garages. You will be notified by e-mail when a space becomes available. When a space becomes available for you, you have one week to accept this spot before it will be offered to a different student. Selecting both garages may slightly decrease your wait time for a space. Parking spaces and waiting list spots are not transferable between students.

Non-subsidized On-Site Parking

If you desire to park on campus, but are currently unable to get a subsidized space, you may obtain a parking space in an on campus garage for $120 per month. In order to apply for one of these spots, please visit the parking office in 108 Harvey/Nelson Building (Main Hospital). In addition to single parking passes, carpool parking passes are also available. Information on the garages available, carpool passes, and parking regulations, please visit the JHMI Corporate Security Parking Website.

Free "After Hours" On-Site Parking

Parking in most garages (except Kennedy Krieger) is open to all JHMI employees free of charge from 4:00pm to 8:30am Monday through Friday and on weekends and holidays. You must swipe your badge to enter and exit the garages. If your badge does not work in the garages for after hours parking, contact the JHMI Parking Office in Harvey Room 108. Please note that some garages close on the weekends and evenings. The garages which are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week are McElderry Street Garage, Orleans Street Garage, and Rutland Garage. For more information on after hours parking, please visit the JHMI Corporate Security Parking Website.

Street Parking

It is possible to park on the streets around and through the East Baltimore campus. However, JHMI Corporate Security warns against parking on the streets. If you do choose to park on the streets, please ensure that you follow all signs and that you only park there during permitted times. In addition, be careful to feed the parking meter and stay cognizant of the time you have left. If you park illegally, your car will be towed.
