Student Parking Waiting List
Graduate
Student Transportation and Parking 2007
What’s
the best way to get to the East Baltimore Campus?
If
you talk to your fellow students, you’ll probably get different
opinions on the best way to get from home to school and back home
again. Some students who live in nearby neighborhoods walk or ride a
bike to campus. Bike racks are available on campus, and two of the
largest racks are in the Rutland breezeway and outside PCTB. JHMI
corporate security has information about bike security on their
website. If you would rather ride a bus, a number of free shuttles
are provided by JHMI and passes for the city buses and subway are
only $20 a month. Many students choose to drive, but once you
consider gas costs, time spent waiting for satellite shuttles, and
traffic congestion, you may find mass transit a better option than
driving.
JHMI
Sponsored Shuttles
Several
shuttles are provided free of charge by JHU and JHMI. The most
popular is the Homewood-JHMI shuttle which runs from the Homewood
campus to JHMI with stops in Charles Village, Penn Station, and Mt.
Vernon. Other shuttles run to Fells Point, Mt. Washington, and Green
Spring Station. Maps and schedules are available at:
MTA
Bus/Metro
Baltimore
has a well-developed public transit system which includes buses, a
subway line, light rail, and commuter trains. Students often
overlook or dismiss this option, but JHMI is a major employer in the
Baltimore area, and MTA provides numerous transportation options to
the East Baltimore campus.
Subway
– The metro subway runs from Owings Mills Mall, through downtown
Baltimore, and ends at the hospital below Broadway Street. This is
a great option if you live in the less expensive Northwest suburbs
of Baltimore.
MARC
train – The MARC train runs from DC through Baltimore and
stops in the suburbs. Ride it to Penn station, and catch the JHMI
shuttle from there.
Bus
– The bus system has local lines that run to JHMI, including
routes from Canton/Fells Point/Patterson Park and several express
lines from commuter lots in the suburbs.

and Schedules – www.mtamaryland.com
MTA
Passes – Subsidized student passes for all buses, light rail,
and subway are available for $20 per month in the Business office
located in BRB 131.
Street
Parking
Corporate
security warns against this, but some students park for free on
streets surrounding JHMI. Many streets have parking meters or
time/day prohibitions (such as Madison and Monument Streets), and
your car will be towed if you park illegally.
Satellite
Parking Lots
Two
satellite lots are available, and parking is fully subsidized for
students. The lots are fenced, and frequent shuttle service is
provided from the lots to JHMI. For space in a satellite lot, go
directly to the Business office (BRB 131). Be aware that these lots
are not open 24 hours.
Monument
Lot – This lot is located at 3700 East Monument Street, about
1.3 miles East of JHMI. This lot is convenient for drivers coming
from I-95. Space is always available in this lot. A $20 refundable
deposit is required for a lot pass.
Fallsway
Lot – This lot is located at 545 N. High Street, west of JHMI
and is convenient to I-83. Space is limited and you may have to
wait for a spot in this lot.
After-Hours Parking
Parking
in most garages (except Kennedy Krieger) is open to all JHMI
employees free of charge after 4pm M-F and on weekends/holidays. See
www.hopkinsmedicine.org/security/Parking/pkgfree.htm
for details. If your badge does not work in the garages for after
hours parking, contact the JHMI Parking Office in Harvey Room 108.
On-Site
Garage Parking
Parking
spaces in garages around campus (usually Orleans St. garage) are
available for student parking and cost $115 per month. A limited
number of subsidized spaces are provided by the SOM at the reduced
rate of $50 per month. The fee is automatically deducted from your
paycheck ($25 per check). On-site subsidized parking must be
arranged through the GSA parking representative. All subsidized
spaces are currently full, and the waiting time for a subsidized spot
averages 1-2 years. Carpool passes are available from the parking
office which allow multiple users to share a single spot for
carpooling. Subsidized student parking is available in one of three
garages:
Caroline
Street Garage – This garage is on the west side of campus near
CRB/CRB2 and is open 24 hours Monday-Friday, but is closed Saturday
and Sunday.
Kennedy
Krieger Garage – Located at the corner of Madison and Broadway,
this garage is near the BRB and Ross buildings and is open 24 hours a
day.
Washington
Street Garage – This garage is at the corner of Monument and
Washington streets near PCTB and is open from 6AM to midnight M-F and
7AM-7PM weekends and holidays.
Subsidized
garage parking is only available through the parking representative.
Send an e-mail to gsaparking@jhmi.edu
if you would like to be added to the waiting list and include:
Your
name, JHMI e-mail address, and graduate program (e.g. CMM, BCMB)
Your
badge number (Card No. from your ID badge) and Social Security
Number
Which
of the three garages you will accept, ranked in order of preference
(select one, two, or all three garages)
The
wait list is established in the order in which e-mails are received.
There is a single wait list for all three garages. You will be
notified by e-mail when a space is available. If you do not accept
the spot when it is offered, you may defer, but your name will be
moved down the list and a space will not be offered to you again for
at least four months. Please only request a garage in which you
would be willing to park permanently. Currently, you may not
transfer between garages once assigned a subsidized spot. Selecting
two or all three garages may slightly decrease your wait time for a
space. Parking spaces and waiting list spots are not transferable
between students, but carpool passes are available. If you would
like more flexibility, remember that full price garage parking is
available for $115 per month.
