Johns Hopkins Hospitalist Program

The Johns Hopkins Hospitalist Program

Welcome to the Johns Hopkins Hospitalist Program web page. Our clinical mission is to provide state-of-the-art, comprehensive, evidence-based clinical care to hospitalized patients from East Baltimore, the metropolitan area, and around the world. Now Hiring Hospitalists.

Our expanding group of Academic Hospitalists cares for a wide range of medical patients in three distinct settings at the Johns Hopkins Hospital: 1) a closed-bed Hospitalist Unit with medical student and resident rotators and night-time coverage by fellows; 2) the historic teaching firms of the Osler Housestaff; and 3) the Internal Medicine Consult Service.

All of our faculty members have dedicated time set aside for non-clinical activities, including medical student and resident education, administration, quality improvement, and research. Hopkins Hospitalists have leadership roles in the Osler Housestaff Program, the Internal Medicine Consult Service, and electives in Hospital Medicine for sub-interns and residents. Others are taking courses to earn advanced degrees, such as Masters’ in Public Health, and are involved in funded research. We have a broad range of academic interests ranging from venous thromboembolic disease to system innovations that improve hospital efficiency. The incredible academic resources and diversity at Hopkins allow for fruitful academic collaboration with other faculty in the Division of General Internal Medicine and across other specialties.

In 2006 we initiated the Johns Hopkins Hospitalist Scholars Program, an innovative program designed to provide academic funding (up to $12,000 per year) for each faculty member who seeks to build an academic career at Hopkins.

For recent Internal Medicine graduates who are serious about careers in research or leadership as Hospitalists, the General Internal Medicine Fellowship Program at Hopkins offers two distinct Hospitalist Fellowships, which can be tailored to give right mix of classroom training, research experience, mentorship, and Hospitalist practice. We are currently recruiting for highly motivated and experienced BC/BE internists. Click here for more details.

Second and third year Internal Medicine residents training in an ACGME recognized program who wish to gain experience in Hospital Medicine may apply for the four-week visiting resident elective. The elective provides an excellent opportunity for residents who are considering a career as a hospitalist or a fellowship in hospital medicine to experience training in an academic patient-care model at Johns Hopkins Hospital. To apply, contact the director of education for the hospitalist service, Dr. Leonard Feldman, at LF@jhmi.edu. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

It is an exciting time to be a Hospitalist, and at Johns Hopkins, the immense clinical and academic resources and spirit of innovation offer exciting opportunities for young faculty to develop into leaders in Academic Hospital Medicine.
