GIM Fellow Dr. Matthew DeCamp has an article appearing "Online First" in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Dr. DeCamp's article, "Social Media and Medical Professionalism: Toward an Expanded Program", addresses new challenges that new media present to medical professionalism.
The author outlines issues on which there is emerging consensus and points up issues raised by new social media still to be addressed. The author then identifies three fundamental issues of medical professionalism that require application to the online environment: professional vs. personal identities, clinical vs. nonclinical uses, and trust. Finally, he addresses future needs in terms
of education, practice and research.
