Dr. Stephen Sisson to Hold Tumulty Chair

Dr. SissonGIM is proud to announce that Associate Professor Stephen Sisson, MD, has been named to the Philip A. Tumulty Chair in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Tumulty served on the Johns Hopkins medical faculty for nearly 50 years and was the first Director of the GIM Division. He was world-renowned as a master clinician and as a superb educator who championed a humanistic approach to the treatment of patients. Dr. Tumulty founded the Topics in Clinical Medicine course that is now named for him and was twice honored as Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the medical students. Before his death in 1989, Dr. Tumulty’s colleagues and patients established the funding of the endowment of the Chair in internal medicine, an area Dr. Tumulty felt important in an age of increasing specialization. The Tumulty Chair was formerly held by Dr. Bill Schlott who recently retired from the faculty.

Dr. Stephen Sisson joined the GIM faculty in 1996, after completing his internship and residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital, including a year as Assistant Chief of Service. Dr. Sisson was promoted to Associate Professor in 2005. Dr. Sisson’s strong commitment to medical education is reflected in his fifteen years of service as the Associate Program Director of the Osler Medical Residency Training Program, and since 1998 as the Director of the Johns Hopkins Internet Learning Center for medical education. Dr. Sisson conducts an active program of research in the field of medical education. Dr. Sisson received his own undergraduate education at Duke University from which he graduated magna cum laude. He earned his MD with research honors at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Congratulation, Dr. Sisson, on your appointment to the Tumulty Chair!
