From Bangor, Maine to Lafayette, Louisiana, from Austin, Texas to Santa Barbara, California, NBC television stations have been airing the story of the POWER Trial’s success in aiding participants to lose weight and keep it off. As Principal Investigator of the POWER Trial at Johns Hopkins, GIM Professor Lawrence Appel, MD, MPH, is interviewed in the television report that has aired on at least 45 stations across the nation so far.
Dr. Appel speaks of the surprising discovery made during the trial that dieters preferred the telephone coaching model, and that delivery of dieting help by that method was as effective as in-person counseling sessions. The prospect of reaching many more aspiring dieters in this cost-effective yet highly effective manner bodes well to significantly revise the options for addressing the current obesity epidemic.
