On September 22nd, 2009, Dr. Edward Miller, Dean of the Medical Faculty and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine and Dr. David G. Nichols, Vice Dean for Education have announced the creation of the School of Medicine’s Institute for Excellence in Education (IEE), with GIM Associate Professor Joseph Cofrancesco, Jr, MD, MPH, FACP, as its inaugural director.
Dr. Cofrancesco chaired the Martin D. Abeloff Committee on Educational Values and Rewards that developed a comprehensive plan for identifying and addressing challenges to the School’s educational mission. Deans Miller and Nichols state that now, “Based on the committee’s hard work and recommendation and the school of medicine’s deep commitment to teaching and education, the IEE has been established to support the many efforts already undertaken by the school and the faculty, and to burnish our deep and very rich heritage as the leader in medical and medical science education and in training the next generation of great leaders.”
Dr. Cofrancesco, whom the Deans acknowledge as “one of our most respected educators and clinicians at Hopkins,” will direct the IEE in fulfilling its charge to “lead the way by developing methods to measure and critically evaluate teaching and educational programs, set standards, inspire and support new educational techniques, methods and technologies, encourage educational scholarship, and give value to and reward the teaching done by all faculty.”
Congratulations, Dr. Cofrancesco, and all best wishes in directing this exciting new project!
