Recently, Dr. Joseph Cofrancesco, Jr., and Dr. Stephen Sisson each spent a week as visiting professors at Asahi General Hospital in Chibu, Japan, not far from Tokyo. Asahi General Hospital is a large institution and one of the most famous teaching hospitals in Japan. They began the practice of inviting visiting professors from abroad in 2002.
When Dr. Sisson visited in September 2009, and Dr. Cofrancesco in October 2009, they heard cases from residents and fellows in the mornings and afternoons; conducted rounds, including seeing patients at bedside; gave mini-lectures, and delivered a formal conference lecture. Asahi Hospital explicitly cites Sir William Osler as the inspiration for their method of medical education, and they could hardly find physician educators more steeped in the Osler tradition than Drs. Sisson and Cofrancesco!
