Dr. Brancati in SGIM Forum

GIM Division Director Fred Brancati, MD, MHS, is the author of a front-page article in the July 2008 issue of SGIM Forum. The July issue is devoted to personal essays by SGIM Council members. Dr. Brancati is an ex officio member of the Council by virtue of his role as President of ACGIM, the Association of Chiefs of General Internal Medicine.

In his essay Dr. Brancati’s delineates his vision of a possible “new” GIM ten years in the future. He describes potential developments arising from what he identifies as two current trends in GIM, “the vertiginous rise of Hospitalists and the deep yearning for a real Medical Home.” Elements he sees thriving that are common to the two trends include increasing team orientation and advancements in technology. The results of these growing trends, Dr. Brancati predicts, could spell better compensation and better working conditions for GIM physicians as well as better quality of care and service to patients.
