Housestaff Research Award Winners at Hopkins GIM
Hopkins GIM recently conducted the first of an annual nationwide competition to recognize the achievements of house officers in GIM research. Our goals in establishing the Housestaff Research Awards were: 1) to stimulate interest in academic GIM; and 2) to recognize outstanding house officers who have the potential to become leaders in GIM research.
Each of three Hopkins GIM Housestaff Research Awards was named for an outstanding mentor and training program director at Johns Hopkins who has earned an international reputation in an exemplary field of GIM research:
The Daniel E. Ford Award, which recognizes research achievement in health services research and prevention was awarded to Dr. Lea Ann Chen, Resident, Mount Sinai Hospital: "Predictors of Colorectal Cancer Screening Completion in Urban Minorities"
The David M. Levine Award, which recognizes research achievement in behavioral medicine, health disparities, and ethics, was awarded to Dr. Vijay Bhandari, a Resident at the University of California, San Francisco, for his abstracts: "Racial Disparities in Outcomes of Inpatient Stroke" and "Quality of Anticoagulation Control: Do Race and Language Matter?"
The Neil R. Powe Award, which recognizes research achievement in clinical epidemiology and outcomes research, was awarded to Dr. David Chan, a Resident at Brigham and Women's Hospital, for his abstract: "Heart Failure Disease Management Programs: A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis."
The awards were presented at a special session of DGIM Grand Rounds on Friday, November 17, 2006. Two of the three winners (Drs. Chan and Chen) presented their abstracts to the faculty and fellows of Hopkins GIM. See photos!
