Faculty Publish in Archives of Internal Medicine

Several current and former faculty members from GIM, the Welch Center and the Baltimore Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC) have authored an article in the October 26, 2009 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine (Vol. 169, No. 19). The article results from research conducted under the NIDDK-funded R01 grant known as “Project Sugar 2.” The publication is entitled “The Effects of a Nurse Case Manager and a Community Health Worker Team on Diabetic Control, Emergency Department Visits, and Hospitalizations among Urban African Americans with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Randomized Controlled Trial.” In their research the authors sought to develop a culturally tailored intervention to improve diabetes care for African American diabetes sufferers, who bear a disproportionate burden from the disease.

The article’s first-named author is Tiffany L. Gary, PhD, MHS, until this month a Core Faculty member of the Welch Center with a joint appointment in GIM. Authors who are current members of both faculties are Hsin-Chieh (Jessica) Yeh, PhD, Felicia Hill-Briggs, PhD, Nae-Yuh Wang, PhD, and Frederick L. Brancati, MD, MHS. David M. Levine, MD, MPH, ScD, and Maura McGuire, MD, are both on the GIM faculty. Authors Lee R. Bone, MPH, RN, Christopher D. Saudek, MD, and Martha N. Hill, PhD, RN, and Dean of the JHU School of Nursing, are all frequent collaborators with Welch Center, GIM and DRTC investigators. Additional authors include Marian Batts-Turner, MSN, RN, CDE, and Neil Powe, MD, MBA, MPH, both recently departed members of both the Welch Center and GIM faculties.
