GIM Fellow Rashmi Kumar, MD, has received full funding from the Osler Small Grants Program for her research project entitled “Perspectives of South Asians Living in the U.S. on End-of-Life Care.” Dr. Kumar will convene a focus group of about 40 South Asians in the Baltimore area to explore their beliefs about end-of-life care. Dr. Kumar will begin recruitment of study participants later this month, and the project will be completed within a year.
Dr. Kumar's grant was awarded by the Osler Center for Clinical Excellence at Johns Hopkins, whose co-directors are David Kern, MD, MPH, and John Flynn, MD, MBA, FACP. According to the Osler Center , its aims are to train physicians in the basic elements of a sound doctor-patient relationship. It is dedicated to training a new generation of doctors who:
• listen to their patients
• communicate effectively with patients and their families
• bridge cultural differences
• apply good diagnostic skills and the best of medical science to the care of their patients
• share decision making with patients and their families
• steer patients through a myriad of options, consultants and tests to arrive at the best health care plan
• set up health care systems that deliver accessible, patient-friendly, high-quality care
• act as advocates for their patients and the health needs of society
• act as a steadfast guide and source of support to patients, no matter where they choose to seek specialty care.
Congratulations to Dr. Kumar on following in the path of previous GIM Fellows in receiving an Osler Center grant!
