Dr. McKusick's death is being mourned across the Hopkins community and around the world. But he will be especially missed in the GIM Division, which he created himself in 1977 as a means to promote the education of outstanding general internists in an era of intense specialization. Dr. McKusick appointed the Division's first 3 chiefs: Dr. Phillip Tumulty, Dr. Craig Smith, and Dr. William Hazzard (see GIM History). He also created the Firm system for the Osler Housestaff--a innovation that it still beloved today and in which GIM faculty play key roles, including 17 out of 80 Firm Faculty, 3 out of 4 Firm Faculty Leaders, and 2 Deputy Directors. The GIM Division is particularly grateful to Dr. McKusick for his contributions to our 30th Anniversary Celebration last year, when he delivered a keynote address on the history of the Division and its importance to the Department of Medicine, despite being hobbled by significant bone pain ( see photos). We salute his memory and pledge ourselves to uphold his high standards for the art and science of internal medicine.
