Lewisohn Wall Dedicated at GIM

Lewisohn Wall Dedicated in GIM

A reception was held on Thursday, May 29th in the GIM headquarters at the 1830 Building in honor of the late Dr. Marjorie Lewisohn and her generous gift to GIM of the proceeds of the sale of one of the paintings in her collection, Henri Matisse’s “The Pink Tablecloth.” To commemorate this gift of $2.9 million, a print copy of the painting has been hung in the GIM lobby on the 8th floor. Accompanying the print is a copy of the portrait of Dr. Lewisohn that hangs in the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Clinic and a statement honoring Dr. Lewisohn and her gift.

Dr. Lewisohn graduated from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1943 and served as the first woman trustee of JHU. She practiced and taught internal medicine at Cornell University New York Medical Center. She directed that following her death, “The Pink Tablecloth” be sold and the proceeds used to create the Marjorie G. Lewisohn Educational Endowment for the Teaching of Outpatient Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine.

The endowment will fund annual Lewisohn Scholars—physicians who will teach primarily in the outpatient clinics. “She didn’t want medical students to learn how to care for patients totally from the lecture stand,” said John Flynn, Clinical Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine. “She wanted students in the clinic, working side by side with senior physicians.” Division Director Dr. Fred Brancati explained that Dr. Lewisohn’s generous gift will now provide “support to directly pay for the time needed for premier teaching in a clinical environment.”
