Three Members of Hopkins GIM Family Honored at SGIM
Three physicians with ties to Hopkins GIM were presented with national awards at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Society of General Internal Medicine in Pittsburgh, PA last week. Members of the Hopkins GIM family received two of the three National Awards for Scholarship in Medical Education that were granted nationwide this year. And another GIM faculty member received a Milton W. Hamolsky Award for her outstanding scientific presentation.
Darcy A. Reed, MD, MPH, a GIM Fellow from 2003 to 2005 in the Medical Education Track, was presented with the award for her work in the funding and quality of medical education research, quality improvement education, and residency duty hours. While at Hopkins, Dr. Reed was mentored by Dr. Scott M. Wright, Associate Professor of Medicine in the GIM Division and Co-Director of the GIM Fellowship Education Track at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Dr. Reed is now Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Primary Care Internal Medicine Department at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Joseph A. Carrese, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Medicine in the GIM Division at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and the inaugural Director of the Program on Ethics in Clinical Practice at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, was recognized with an award for his scholarship in educational program development in clinical ethics and scholarship in teaching about clinical ethics. Since 2005, Dr. Carrese’s Bioethics Institute initiatives have succeeded in developing and implementing clinical ethics curricula in the residency training programs in surgery, pediatrics, and internal medicine at both JHH and JHBMC. His publications on clinical ethics in cross-cultural settings have been used in teaching in medical schools from UCLA to Harvard.
Neda Ratanawongsa, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the GIM Division at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, was one of three recipients of the Milton W. Hamolsky Award for outstanding scientific presentation. Dr. Ratanawongsa completed the GIM Fellowship in Medical Education in 2007 and currently serves as the Assistant Program Director for the internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview. Drs. Joseph A. Carrese and Scott M. Wright mentored Dr. Ratanawongsa on her project, entitled "Challenges and Rewards in Primary Care: Seeing It From Both Sides," which was funded by the Johns Hopkins Osler Center for Clinical Excellence.
