Housestaff Research Awards 2007

GIM 2007 Housestaff Research Awards to be Presented

GIM is proud to announce the winners of the 2007 Hopkins GIM Housestaff Research Awards. The winners of the four awards receive a trip to Baltimore and a prize of $500. GIM sponsors four awards for housestaff research, each bearing the name of the faculty member whose work exemplifies the theme of the award.

This year, the David M. Levine award for achievement in behavioral medicine, health disparities, and ethics was granted to Jeffrey T. Kullgren, MD, MPH, for his abstract entitled “Beyond Affordability: The Impact of Nonfinancial Barriers on Access for Uninsured Adults.” Dr. Kullgren received his MD from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in 2006, and is now a Resident in Primary Care Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, Boston, MA.

The Neil R. Powe Award for achievement in clinical epidemiology and outcomes research was awarded to Erin N. Kahler, MD, for her abstract, “Perceived Degree of Effort of Exercise in Women with Type 2 Diabetes.” Dr. Kahler earned her MD at Quillen College of Medicine, East Tennessee State University in 2005. She is now a Resident Physician, PGY3, in the University of Colorado Internal Medicine Residency Program, Primary Care Training Track.

The L. Randol Barker Award for achievement in innovations or research in medical education was granted to Raquel K. Belforti, DO, for her abstract, “The Impact of a Simulation Training Program on the Confidence of Residents to Lead and Perform Adult Resuscitation.” Dr. Belforti received her DO degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2005. She is now a Third Year Internal Medicine Resident at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA.  

The Daniel E. Ford Award for achievement in health services research and prevention went to Benjamin D. Sommers, MD, PhD, for his abstract, “Loss of Health Insurance Among Adults in Medicaid.” Dr. Sommers earned both his MD and his PhD in Health Policy at Harvard Medical School in 2007, and is a Resident in Internal Medicine/Primary Care at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA.
