Hopkins GIM Fellowship: Patient, Physician and Society Course

Patient, Physician, and Society Course

Background

Fellows may volunteer to serve as small group facilitators for the Patient, Physician, and Society Course in the School of Medicine. The course focuses on the personal, professional, social, behavioral, organizational, and public factors that influence the health care practices and beliefs of patients and physicians. The course has small group discussions that complement large group didactic sessions. Each small group discussion is led by a rotating group of 2-3 assigned students and co-facilitated by a pair of small group leaders. The small group sessions are scheduled for Tuesdays from 3:00 to 4:00 PM for 2nd-year students, and Wednesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 PM for 1st-year students, immediately following the corresponding large group sessions. The sessions begin at the end of August and continue into the Spring. The small group leaders do not have to meet with their students during the weeks that are scheduled for special selectives.

Expectations for GIM Fellows

As  a co-facilitator for the small group sessions, GIM fellows are expected t 1. Facilitate the small group discussions, aiming to engage all students, while allowing 2-3 students each week to lead the discussions; 2. Complete an evaluation form each week for the student discussion leaders; 3. Complete a brief narrative assessment of each student; 4. Meet individually with each student (7-8 students per leader) for about 15 minutes twice during the year to discuss their personal and professional development, and give and elicit feedback (time for these meetings will be built into the course schedule); 5. Review 2-3 short papers per assigned student (7-8 students per leader) and make thoughtful comments using a structured evaluation instrument that we will provide.
