Donald W. Reynolds FD~AGE On-site Consultation Program at Johns Hopkins
The D.W. Reynolds National Consortium offers on-site consultations designed to foster the geriatrics education efforts of medical schools and residency programs at U.S. academic health centers. These consultations, provided by faculty experts from the four Consortium members, are available to all alleopathic and osteopathic medical schools and residency programs, except those who have funded Reynolds programs. Consultations are free of charge, except for on-site expenses (e.g., meals and lodging), which are born by the hosting institution. Community-based residency programs and medical schools that do not have the critical mass of geriatrics faculty to launch major geriatrics programs are particularly encouraged to apply.
Consultations will be performed by a geriatrics faculty member from Duke, Mt. Sinai, Johns Hopkins or UCLA depending on location and will be selected to meet the needs of host-sites. The consultations will typically be one day in duration. In preparation for the visit, host program leaders will be asked to describe current geriatrics educational efforts, resources available (including faculty), and key local people. In addition, prior to the site visits, program leaders will be asked to provide a brief SWOT (strengths, weakness, opportunities, threats) analysis of their programs. A complete description and guide for preparing this information can be found here.
The site visit will be organized so the consultant can meet with many of these key people and work with the geriatrics program to problem-solve and plan, including crafting a formal action plan. As part of these consultations, Consortium faculty can present at grand rounds, geriatric conferences, or specific teaching activities for target audiences such as surgeons and medical sub-specialists. Following the visit, a structured written report will be sent to the program director of the host program and a follow-up telephone call will be made by the consultant. If needed, a follow-up consultation can be provided in-person.
