Combined Training in Genetics and Internal Medicine

Since October 2005, the Department of Internal Medicine and the Institute of Genetic Medicine have offered a five-year program of combined training in internal medicine and medical genetics leading to certification by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Medical Genetics.

The first year of the program is the same as the intern year for internal medicine residents. The next three years each include six months of training in internal medicine and six months in genetics. The final year of training focuses entirely in genetic research.

Applicants interested in this combined training pathway must submit their application through ERAS for the Department of Internal Medicine AND submit a separate application on this site.  You will be contacted by Adel Gilbert, MS, CGC Genetic Medicine Program Manager for the Institute of Genetic Medicine, to arrange a special genetic interview, if you are offered an interview in Internal Medicine. Additional information about the Board requirements for this combined training program are available at The American Board of Internal Medicine website.
