Residency Requirements

Clinical Genetics Residency Training Requirements

  1. Graduates with good standing from an approved or recognized school of medicine or osteopathy.

  2. Satisfactory completion of at least 2 years in an ACGME approved residency in a primary care specialty (Pediatrics, Family Practice, Internal Medicine or Obstetrics and Gynecology). To verify that your program is an ACGME accredited program you can check here.  Documentation of successful completion of training and a letter of recommendation from your residency program director is required at the time of the application.

  3. Individuals who have received residency training or clinical experience outside of the United States must contact the American Board of Medical Genetics to apply for training credit. The ABMG will process your request and provide you with written documentation regarding whether or not you are eligible for one or two years of credit. Such credit is necessary for eligibility into the clinical genetics training program if you have not successfully fulfilled criteria number 2, as stated above.

  4. Our residents receive much of their funding through the National Institute of Health. In order to be eligible for this funding, an applicant must be a United States citizen, a non-citizen national of the U.S. or have been lawfully admitted to permanent residence at the time of application. Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible for support. Adequate outside funding would be required for those who do not meet these requirements.

  5. Graduates from an approved or recognized medical school outside of the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico must present a valid ECFMG Certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates as an additional condition of eligibility Or check our international student page.

  6. All graduates of our Clinical Genetics Residency Program will be expected to sit for the American Board of Medical Genetics Examinations at the completion of their training. The eligibility criteria is available on the ABMG website.

  7. Upon recommendation of a Chief of Service and with the approval of the Medical Board, the Hospital may require a member of the resident staff to be licensed in the State of Maryland.
