Supervision of all residents in the Clinical Genetic Medicine Residency at Johns Hopkins is in compliance with the Accreditation Counsel for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the Graduate Medical Education Committee at Johns Hopkins University. Supervision is overseen by the Program Director and the Clinical Director.
Residents on the inpatient or dysmorpholgy consult service are supervised by a member of the clinical genetic faculty who is responsible for the genetics service as the attending physician. This duty is rotated every two weeks among a core group of medical genetics teaching staff that is board-certified in clinical genetics and has extensive clinical genetics experience. In addition to the faculty member on the attending service, coverage is provided for patients with metabolic disease by faculty members with board-certification in biochemical genetics and extensive expertise in the diagnosis and management of inborn errors of metabolism. Both the clinical genetics attending and metabolic attending are available to the resident for admissions, consults, or questions by pager 24 hours a day.
Residents in outpatient genetic clinics are supervised by the clinical genetic teaching staff member assigned to the patient being evaluated/managed by the resident. Residents rotating on other ambulatory services such as prenatal genetics and cancer genetics are supervised by the directors of those programs. Residents in clinical genetics laboratory rotations are supervised by the appropriate laboratory directors.
