Five Year Curriculum

COMBINED CLINICAL GENETICS AND PEDIATRICS FIVE YEAR RESIDENCY PROGRAM CURRICULUM

Year 1

The intern year of training provides the resident with a familiarity of the department of pediatrics, the residents and personnel that will facilitate their integration and training for all 5 years.  This year of training is in large part the same as the intern year for a categorical pediatric resident. The yellow blocks indicate when the resident rotates in pedicatrics.

Year 2

In July of the second year the resident will attend the clinical genetics orientation with the new incoming genetic residents.  At this point the trainee remains in pediatrics and will begin their genetics training in January, and will become integrated into the didactic training and clinical responsibilities of a genetic residency.  A senior genetic resident will be assigned as mentor in the first weeks the combined genetics/peds resident is on service.

Year 4

By the fourth year of training the resident will assume a larger role in the pediatric program as the genetics educator, participating in providing genetics lectures at quarterly intervals to the PGY 1 and PGY 2 residents in pediatric training.

+Elective Rotations include the residents choice to repeat rotations in genetics, commence a research project or attend the following outpatient clinics: Huntington disease, clefting and craniofacial, spina bifida, Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell, osteogenesis imperfecta, and skeletal dysplasia.

Year 5

This year of training is devoted primarily to research study.  Research projects are often established by the end of the fourth year with dedicated time available in this year.  Genetics continuity patients are followed throughout the first 6 months of the fifth year.  Attendance and presentation at a major scientific meeting such as the American Society of Human Genetics is expected.  In addition the resident will be expected to prepare a written distillation of their proposed research project. For those that plan to complete an optional sixth year of training this is usually written in the form of an NRSA grant. The purpose of writing a research proposal is two?fold. Second, the proposal provides a summary and a research plan agreed upon by the mentor and resident. Our experience has been that residents publish at least one first author manuscript and are given the opportunity to present at a national meeting by the conclusion of their training.
