Introduction to Clinical Medicine

Timing of Course: September-January
Content of Course: Physician-patient relationship. Students attend preceptor’s office sessions and observe aspects of the medical encounter. Student involvement is encouraged. Background readings and a reflective paper are required. Preceptor evaluates student who receives an Honors/ High Pass/ Pass/Fail grade for the course.
Level of Commitment: Office sessions must be in the afternoon. Student generally arrives about 2:00 pm (first year courses end at 1:00pm). Student is required to be present for 10 sessions to pass the course.
Location: Preceptor’s office
Preceptors: Generalists (Internal Medicine, Pediatrics), Ob-Gyn, Surgeons. 120 preceptor sites needed.

Clinical Skills: Pediatric Experience

Timing of Course: Typically late January or February
Course Content: Students have the newborn exam demonstrated to them and them have their new skills supervise in the newborn nursery
Level of Commitment: One afternoon 2-5 pm, working with 3-4 medical students.
Location: JHH, St. Agnes Hospital, Howard County general Hospital, Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Harbor Hospital, Franklin Square Hospital. Other hospitals may be used if preceptors available.
Preceptors: Pediatricians, neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners skilled in performing and teaching the newborn examination.
Faculty Development: Written materials will be distributed by course director.

Year of Medical School: Third and Fourth
Timing of Course: 4 ½ week blocks throughout the 45 week academic calendar. Physician preceptors must commit to at least one contiguous 4 week block per year and may elect to always have a different student (rotating every 4 weeks) in their office throughout the year.
Content of Course: Clinical clerkship during which students learn initial evaluation and management of common outpatient medical problems in children, the focused history and physical examination, preventive medicine, and chronic illness. The students 4 ½ experience is combined with a 4 ½ week inpatient experience. Together, these comprise the basic clerkship.
Level of Commitment: Students are expected to have 5 half-day sessions per week. Formal lectures/discussions occur at the medical school, and students are expected to do independent study to address knowledge gaps. Patient experience should include private time with 4-6 patients per day, depending on student and preceptor; this generally requires a separate examination room for the student. Preceptors are expected to supervise student’s clinical performance, and complete a written evaluation (via electronic form) at the end of the rotation.
