I. Introduction to Clinical Medicine
Course Director: Amy Gordon, MD (agordon@jhmi.edu)
Year of Medical School: First
Timing of Course: September-December
Content of Course: Physician-patient relationship. Students attend preceptor’s office sessions and observe aspects of the medical encounter. Background readings and a reflective paper are required. Preceptor evaluates student who receives a Pass/Fail grade for the course.
Level of Commitment: Office sessions must be in the afternoon. Student generally arrives about 2:00 pm (first year courses end at 1:00pm). Student is required to be present for 12 sessions to pass the course.
Location: Preceptor’s office
Preceptors: Generalists, Ob-Gyn, Surgeons. 120 preceptor sites needed.

II. “An Integrated Medical Encounter” (AIME) Course within Clinical Skills
Course Director: Rob Shochet, MD, (rshoche1@jhmi.edu).
Year of Medical School: Second
Timing of Course: Class is split; students take the course in one of 2 six week blocks, October –December.
Course Content: Students use interactive exercises and small groups to discuss communication skills, clinical reasoning and shared decision making.
Level of Commitment: Six afternoons, 1-5 pm, working with 6 students at a time.
Location: Johns Hopkins Hospital & Medical School
Preceptors: Any interested clinician. 2 preceptors co-facilitate a group; need is for 20 preceptors for each six week session.
Faculty Development: Written faculty guide. Faculty meet briefly before each session to discuss goals of the session and debrief previous week.
IIII. Clinical Skills, Quarter III
Course Director: Rob Shochet, MD, (rshoche1@jhmi.edu)
Year of Medical School: Second
Timing of Course: mid-January to mid-March
Course Content: Students practice the complete history and physical examination one afternoon a week.
Level of Commitment: One afternoon per week, 2-5 pm, working with 2 medical students at a time. Preceptor is present for the performance of the H&P.
Location: JHH and other community hospital sites
Preceptors: Physicians and other clinicians with knowledge of the medical history and basic physical diagnosis. 60 preceptors needed.

V. Basic Ambulatory Medicine Clerkship:
Course Director: Pat Thomas, MD (pthomas1@jhmi.edu)
Year of Medical School: Third and Fourth
Timing of Course: 4 week blocks in September, November, midJan-mid Feb, April, June and July. Preceptors can volunteer for 1-6 rotations per year.
Content of Course: Clinical clerkship during which students learn initial evaluation and management of common outpatient medical problems, the focused history and physical examination, preventive medicine, and chronic illness. Most sites are general internists, and family practice. Have used rural sites and “vulnerable population” sites with student interest identified beforehand.
Level of Commitment: Students are expected to have 5 half-day sessions per week. Formal lectures occur on-site, and students are expected to do independent study to address knowledge gaps. Patient experience should include private time with 2-4 patients per day, depending on student and preceptor; this requires a separate examination room for the student.
Location: Preceptor’s office
Preceptors: Generalists, family practitioners. Database currently has about 80 participants; need 20 per rotation.
