Ophthalmology Part-time Faculty Teaching Oppportunities

Part-time faculty teaching opportunities for residents


Basic Clerkship: Johns Hopkins School of Medicine students are required to take a 1 week clerkship in ophthalmology during the clinical years of the curriculum. The basic clerkship is held five times per year at the beginning of the each academic quarter. Opportunities for part-time teaching include:

Precepting during a 3 hour basic skills practicum in which small groups of students are taught and allowed to practice ophthalmology clinical examination skills. Setting: the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Precepting during a 3 hour patient practicum in which small groups of students perform supervised examinations of standardized patients with ocular pathology. Setting: the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Precepting a single student during a half-day session in an out-patient office or operating room. Students will perform supervised clinical examinations, observe surgery, or participate in surgery as deemed appropriate by the preceptor. Setting: practitioner’s office or out-patient surgical facility.

Elective Clerkship: A month long clinical elective is offered to Johns Hopkins medical students five times per year at the beginning of each academic quarter. The experience consists of daily assignments in the out-patient clinic or surgery setting. Students will perform supervised clinical examinations, observe surgery, or participate in surgery as deemed appropriate by the preceptor. Students also attend afternoon tutorial sessions in which topics are presented in a 1 hour small group lecture/seminar format. Opportunities for part-time teaching include:

Precepting a single student during a day long session in the outpatient office or operating room. Setting: practitioner’s office or out-patient surgical facility.

Teaching g a small group tutorial session on a topic of your choice. Setting: the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Clinical Skills Course: Second year, pre-clinical medical students participate in a year long course in which basic clinical examination skills are presented. The ophthalmology portion of this course occurs over two days. Each day consists of an overview lecture followed by a 2 hour small group practical session in which basic ophthalmology clinical exam skills are taught and practiced. Opportunities for part-time teaching include:

Precepting during a 2 hour basic skills practicum in which small groups of medical students are taught and allowed to practice ophthalmology clinical examination skills. Setting: the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Pathophysiology Course: Second year, pre-clinical medical students participate in a year long course in which organ systems pathophysiology is presented. The ophthalmology portion of this course consists of an introductory lecture followed by a 2 hour small group session in which illustrative patient cases including clinical and histopathologic slides are presented and discussed. Opportunities for part-time teaching include:

Precepting during a 2 hour, small group session in which illustrative patient cases are presented and discussed. Setting: the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Part-time faculty teaching opportunities for residents: Part-time faculty are also encouraged to participate in resident teaching. These opportunities consist primarily of precepting residents for half- or full day sessions in the clinic, operating room, or Wilmer Emergency Room.
