Teaching Development Opportunities

Longitudinal Program in Teaching Skills

Faculty Development Program in Teaching Skills, Randy Barker, M.D., Sc.M., Karan Cole, Sc. D., Co-Directors
This program enables participants to explore concepts related to teaching and relationship-building with medical trainees, patients, and colleagues. Concepts are generally presented in total group sessions among all participants. However, most of the course time is spent in collaborative learning groups of 6-8 participants with 1-2 facilitators who stay together throughout the course. Individuals bring teaching challenges to the group, use reflection, dialogue, and feedback to get others’ perspectives, practice the skills being learned, and observe others..

Part 1:

There are15 consecutive sessions, Thursdays, 8:30 -12 noon, February 9- April 12, 2012, Bayview Medical Center, Mason F. Lord Building Center
After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to describe and apply skills related to the following content areas:  Leadership and management, Influencing learners through motivation and empowerment, Cultural competence,Conflict management, Formalized brainstorming, Small group teaching and learning

Part 2:
There are 10 consecutive sessions every Thursday, 8:30-12 noon, February 9 - April 19, 2012, Bayview Medical Center, Mason F. Lord Building Center
Teaching Skills is individualized to participant needs and is based upon their experience from Part 1. Participants continue to apply and deepen their learning from Part 1, while addressing new content areas. As in Part 1, most of the course time is spent in collaborative learning groups of 6-8 participants with 1-2 facilitators who stay together throughout the course. Individuals bring teaching challenges to the group, use reflection, dialogue, and feedback to get others’ perspectives, practice the skills being learned, and observe others. Prerequisite:  Participation in Part 1 of the Teaching Skills Program

This is a 10-month longitudinal program that involves learning curriculum development and evaluation through didactics, discussions, and a mentored curriculum development project. The program is taught and projects are mentored by international experts in curriculum development and evaluation, who have published the widely used text on the subject: Curriculum Development for Medical Education: A Six-Step Approach.  By the end of the program, participants will have designed, piloted, and formulated plans for the implementation of a curriculum in medical education relevant to the needs of their own institution as well as to their own use of professional careers.

This 4 hour introductory workshop provides a brief overview of curriculum development principles and practical experience in applying some of the most important curriculum development steps. It introduces participants to resources and faculty development opportunities for further developing one's curriculum development skills.
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:
Recognize curriculum development principles.
Recognize four of the six steps of curriculum development, and the importance of congruence among them.
Recognize additional resources that are available for curriculum development skills improvement

This two-day introductory workshop provides an in-depth overview of curriculum development principles, and practical experience in applying the six curriculum development steps. Participants who want additional training and supervised application to a curriculum development project should also take Part 2: Facilitated Work in Progress.

Outpatient Teaching - A Primer and Panel Discussion Video

Part 1(video) - A Primer
In the first half of this session, Pat Thomas, MD from Ambulatory Medicine
and Associate Dean for Curriculum at the School of Medicine opens with a
primer on the "the one minute teacher" for enhancing bedside teaching in
busy clinical settings like the outpatient arena.

Part 2 (video) - Panel Discussion
In the second half, Pat Thomas joins three of the Department of Neurology's top-rated outpatient clinical teachers,
Drs. Crawford, Kossoff, and McArthur for a panel discussion on tips and tricks for how to engage and involve medical students in the outpatient setting while still handling a busy clinic load.

Thomas, MD, Associate Dean of Curriculum, Associate Professor of MedicineThe Giving Feedback online course (30 minutes) provides faculty and resident supervisors with the knowledge and skills they need to provide effective feedback to a learner, whether in the laboratory, classroom or clinic. Without effective feedback, mistakes go uncorrected and good performance is not reinforced. In this workshop, you will observe and identify both poor feedback performance and effective feedback skills in lively demonstrations. You will learn about common barriers to providing feedback and how to surmount them, and can download additional background material, references, and tips for giving feedback to your students, residents, postdoctoral fellows and other trainees.

Video Presentation & PP Handout: GTS Is Coming ! Are you Ready?The transition to the Genes to Society curriculum has begun. Full implementation began in August 2009 with the move to the new Armstrong Education Building. This workshop is designed to provide an overview of the new curriculum for faculty who currently teach,emphasizing what is new and how your teaching will change in the new curriculum. This will include guidelines for creating lectures, designing and running small group activities,and how to access information and important contacts for the new curriculum. Participants will receive a Resource Manual for Teachers in the JHUSOM Curriculum.
