Current Recruitment for Family Studies
Functional Capacity Study. The National Institute of Mental Health funded a research study focused on the relationship between genes and the ability to function effectively in daily activities. We are revisiting many of the individuals of Ashkenazi descent who have previously enrolled in our genetic studies. We visit individuals in their homes or another location of their choice. Participants are asked to take part in a brief interview regarding their typical day-to-day functioning as well as to perform simple tasks that contribute to practical daily functioning. Continuing Genetic Studies. You may be able to help us if you have ever been diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or bipolar disorder with psychotic features. Our current studies are enrolling affected individuals and families of Ashkenazi Jewish descent where at least one living relative has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder. We ask the individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder to allow a member of our research group to visit him or her to complete an in-person psychiatric evaluation and blood draw, taking approximately two to three hours. A small honorarium payment will be provided to each volunteer who is interviewed in person. Since 1996, we have enrolled more than 3100 Jewish families in these studies. You can read comments from some of the many volunteers who have recently corresponded with us in Messages From Our Participants. . If you are interested in participation, we can use your help. Please give us a call on our toll-free (no charge) telephone line or email us at familystudy@jhmi.edu Also, the answers we have provided in our Frequently Asked Questions ("FAQ") may provide further useful information about our studies.
