Emergency Medicine Fellowship Programs

International health work is an important part of emergency medicine at Johns Hopkins. Our faculty, fellows and residents have participated in international work and programs around the world. The Department of Emergency Medicine has formed a partnership with the Department of International Health in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to create the Center for Refugee and Disaster Response, a leading research and training center for the response to disasters and complex humanitarian emergencies.

Director:Linda Regan, M.D.
Goal:To develop knowledge and expertise in the essential areas of medical education, including administration of EM residency programs and undergraduate medical education programs as well as educational skills and program design.
  
Description:The medical education fellowship is a focused year of training in the fundamental elements of resident and undergraduate medical student administration and education. The three main areas include:
1. Residency administration/education.
2. Undergraduate medical student administration/education.
3. Simulation.

Focus can vary based on interest and can include the following elements:
1. Understanding RRC and ACGME guidelines for residency.
2. Understanding national guidelines.
3. Learning about evaluation methods for each of the six core competency areas.
4. Providing effective feedback.
5. Understanding adult educational theory and learn and practice various methods of education.
6. Required component: research, design and implement a curriculum advance into a part of a departmental educational program.
  
Clinical Effort:Maximum of 900 clinical hours/academic year.
  
Prerequisites:Board Prepared or Certified in Emergency Medicine.
  
Program Length:1 year.
  
Positions:1 per year.

Description:

Integrated program in Emergency

Description:

ED (JHH, JHBMC) experience with
multiple instruments/applications.
Additional experience encouraged in
Anesthesia/Vascular/Opthomology, etc.

Research Fellowship

Research Fellowship
Director:Richard Rothman, M.D., Ph.D.
Goal:To train physician scientists to
become independent investigators
and nationally recognized leaders in
emergency medicine research.
 
Description:

Emphasized areas include:
Health services, outcomes and
patient safety, diagnosis of infectious
diseases, translational research, injury
prevention, and disaster medicine.
Intensive mentorship.
Course work.
Possible degrees: MPH, MHSc, Ph.D.
Focused degree in Translational Research
(Graduate training program in clinical research.)
Experience in all aspects of research.

 
Clinical Effort:ED (JHH or JHBMC).

EMS Fellowship

EMS Fellowship
EMS Fellowship
Director:Nelson Tang, M.D.
Goal:To prepare academic emergency physcians
for leadership and future medical direction
of EMS programs and systems.
 
Description:

Combined focused program of administration,
teaching and scholarship. Mentored direct-field
experience with public safety, EMS systems, 
critical care, ground and air transport, mass gathering
event support, and law enforcement special operations,
and tactical medicine. Supervised program of escalating
medical control responsibility for ground, air, and special
operations EMS programs. Operational medical support
opportunties for federal and state law enforcement
agencies and disaster management/response organizations.
  

Formal courses available, incluidng degree program (MPH).

 
Clinical Effort:ED (JHH, JHBMC, JHHCGH)
2 - 2 1/2 days per week.
 
Prerequisites:Board Prepared or Certified in EM.

Goal:To develop academic leaders in
global health development and research.
 
Description:International health work is an integral program of emergency medicine at Johns Hopkins. Our faculty, fellows and residents have participated in international work and programs around the world. The Department of Emergency Medicine has formed a partnership with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to work with the Center for Refugee and Disaster Response (Department of International Health), and the Center for Public Health and Human Rights (Department of Epidemiology). Fellows and residents work within these centers to develop and apply hands-on skills in research, field epidemiology, and program management focused on humanitarian assistance, international health development, and emergency health development.

Courses and practicum with international
placements. MPH degree is a usual component.

Description:

Combined clinical, administrative and research program. Clinical activity is at JHH EACU and main ED. Research and administration include intensive mentorship respectively.

To train proficient medical expert witnesses.

 
Description:

Scholarship training in medical legal and
health policy issues, particularly as they
pertain to Emergency Medicine.

Placement in Law Office or Hospital Legal Department.

Placement in Legislators Office (State or Federal.)

Developed Didactic Program Training in, and experience as,
expert witness.

Disaster Fellowship

Disaster Fellowship
Director:Thomas Kirsch, MD, MPH
Goal:To train academic and management leaders in disaster preparedness, response, and research.
Note:An unrestricted license to practice medicine clinically in the USA is a prerequisite for all applicants unless their salary is funded from other sources.
Description:

The Disaster Fellowship focuses on training leaders in all aspects of disaster management with an emphasis on academics (research and teaching) in an emergency medicine and public health framework. To better learn research and epidemiologic methods, as well as humanitarian response background, the fellowship generally includes an MPH degree from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Clinical work and teaching experience in the emergency department is a required part of the fellowship. Field experience in disaster and humanitarian relief is common, as well as the opportunity to work with UN, federal and state programs.

Degree Programs:Masters, Ph.D.
Clinical Effort:2 - 2 1/2 days a week.

Other post-graduate physician applicants may be considered.
