This update is to provide you with information on the upcoming activities of the OWISM, as well as to make you aware of some interesting articles to read and videos to view! Work/Life Intersection Series
The Office of Women in Science and Medicine will hold an interactive session entitled "Long Term care Insurance "which will take place on February 18, from 12:00PM-1:00PM in the Turner Building, West Room. This is part of a series for women faculty and staff to discuss issues surrounding work-life intersection. What are my options when it comes to long term care planning for myself or a family member? Join Rick Stewart from Crump Life Insurance Services to learn why long term care planning is important at any age. This session will also provide an overview of the various types of insurance, including Medicare, Medicaid, self-insuring, private insurance, and linked benefit products offering life insurance and long term care insurance together. For this special session we have additionally invited our male colleagues-as adequate insurance is important to all our faculty and staff! Please take the time to attend this important workshop. Please bring your lunch, dessert and beverages will be provided. This session is open to all faculty and staff. Bridging The Gap
The OWISM invites junior women faculty and women post-doctoral students (both in the basic sciences and clinical areas) to attend the first lecture of 2014 in our Bridging the Gap Program. This session entitled "You're the Speaker! Dealing with Q and A and Beating Anxiety!" which will be facilitated by the Director of the Professional Development Office, Donna Vogel. The ability to develop control your lecture and question session is critical to your long term success. Please take the time to attend this important session which will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm in the Turner Building, West Room. Information and Conversation Sessions
The OWISM will host its first Information and Conversation session of 2014 entitled "Bumps on the Road in Academia: Opportunities and Challenges for Women" which will be facilitated by Kim Skarupski, Assistant Dean of Faculty Development. This session is critical for your academic success. This session will take place on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm and will be held in MRB G03. Please make the time to attend this important offering! This session is open to all SOM women faculty. Respond to email@example.com if you plan to attend. Beverages and desserts will be provided. OWISM Speed Mentoring
The OWISM continues its unique speed mentoring program! In each one hour session scheduled, mentees will have the opportunity to network with three to four women mentors. We will continue to have 4 sessions annually, and our next event is scheduled for March 4, 2014, 8:30am in the MRB G01. These sessions will give our SOM junior faculty the opportunity to network with our outstanding senior women faculty. Depending on how many faculty register, we will be assigning you a role (mentor vs. mentee) on that date. We are looking for both mentors and mentees, so please contact the OWISM@jhmi.edu if you want to learn about this program and/or register! See the attached brochure for further information! Also see our mentor and mentee guidelines so that you can be prepared for this session and network with your colleagues! Light breakfast beginning at 8:15am will be provided!
Mark your calendar for The Mary Elizabeth Garrett Lecture!
The Mary Elizabeth Garrett lectureship, which honors outstanding women in academics, is named for Mary Elizabeth Garrett, who provided financial support that enabled the School of Medicine to open in 1893. Mary Garrett tied her support to the requirement that women be allowed to matriculate into the newly established medical school.
This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Robin Ely, Diane Doerge Wilson Professor of Business Administration and Senior Associate Dean for Culture and Community at Harvard Business School.
Professor Ely conducts research on race and gender relations in organizations with a focus on organizational change, group dynamics, learning, conflict, power, and identity. In her role as Senior Associate Dean for Culture and Community, Professor Ely is heading a culture change initiative at Harvard Business School to ensure that all members of the HBS community are able to thrive and reach their potential for advancing the mission of the School. This work was recently highlighted in a New York Times magazine article. Professor Ely has taught MBA courses in leadership, diversity, teams, and statistics; she has also taught in HBS's executive education programs, including leadership programs designed specifically for women. Please make every effort to attend this lecture on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 12:00pm in the Arcade Lecture Hall (Zayed 2117).

Save the Date for the OWISM Annual Event!
We will have our annual OWISM event on June 19, 2014 in the Chevy Chase Auditorium beginning at 4:30pm. This year Dean Paul Rothman will discuss his vision on leadership opportunities for women faculty at the SOM. We will also be presenting the Vice Dean's Award for the advancement of women. This Award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated commitment to recruitment, mentoring and advancement of women faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Please hold the date! Full details about this wonderful event and requests for nominations for the Vice Dean's Award for the Advancement of Women Faculty will follow shortly!
OWISM CV Review Program
The OWISM continues to provide CV review for senior Women Associate Professors who anticipate promotion to Full Professor in the next 2 years. We encourage you to participate in this unique process, and get input on your CV from two female Full Professors. This program has been very useful for our faculty and I encourage you to send your CV if appropriate.
Women's Leadership Program Cohort Luncheons
We are also initiating a program for our previous LPWF members! We plan to have 3 informal luncheons yearly, (WLPCL-Women's Leadership Program Cohort Luncheons), where women who have graduated from our previous leadership programs can network together and discuss issues germane to their academic careers in an informal setting!
Detailed information about these brown bag luncheons will follow!
Emerging Women Leadership Program
We are just starting our third EWLP cohort. We have recruited many wonderful faculty to participate in this program! Please see the above attached list of participants who are attending!

AMWA's 99th Annual Meeting Women in Medicine: Successfully Facing Future Challenges and Advances
The American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) will host its 99th Annual Meeting, March 14th to 16th, 2014. This meeting will convene leading academic physicians, scientists, students, and prominent policy makers to discuss advances in women's health, new concepts in mentorship, and career advancement for women in medicine. Presentations will also address how advances in medical technology and affordable care will affect the treatment of patients in the future.The American Medical Women's Association Presidential Award will be presented to Arianna Huffington for her life's work and contributions to women's health at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Saturday, March 15th at 7 pm.
