April 2013 OWISM Update:

Dear Women Faculty,

This letter is to update you on the upcoming activities of the OWISM, as well as to provide you with some interesting articles to read and videos to view!

In regards to the activities of the OWISM, there is much going on:

OWISM Annual Event

Please save the date of June 13, 2013 at 4 PM and attend the OWISM Annual Event. This year we will be presenting the Vice Dean’s Award for the Advancement of Women Faculty to Jennifer Haythornthwaite Professor of Psychiatry, Director of the Center for Mind-Body Research. Additionally Catherine DeAngelis, Editor in Chief Emerita of JAMA, Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Health Policy and Management, JHSPH will be recognized with a lifetime achievement award for her long term advocacy of women faculty at the SOM. Martha Hill, Dean of The School of Nursing, will be the keynote speaker at this event. Please make all efforts to attend this celebration of unique and exceptional JHU women faculty!  Please RSVP to the OWISM @jhmi.edu if you plan to attend.

OWISM CV Review Program

The OWISM continues to provide CV review for senior Associate Professors who anticipate promotion to Full Professor in the next 2 years. We encourage you to participate in this unique process, and get input on your CV from two Women Full Professors. This program has been very useful for women and I encourage you to send your CV if appropriate.  

OWISM Speed Mentoring

The OWISM has kicked off a unique speed mentoring program! In each one hour session, mentees will have the opportunity to network with three senior mentors. We plan on having 4 sessions annually, and our next event is scheduled for Tuesday, June 25, 2013 from 8:30-9:30am in the Arcade Lecture Hall located next to the Chevy Chase Auditorium. We are looking for mentors and mentees, so please contact the OWISM@jhmi.edu if you want to learn about this program and/or register! See the attached brochure for further information!

Work/Life Intersection Series

The Office of Women in Science and Medicine will hold an interactive session on “Internet Security and Social Media” which will take place on Wednesday, June 5, from 12:00PM-1:00PM in the Arcade Lecture Hall located next to the Chevy Chase Auditorium. This is part of a series for women faculty and staff to discuss issues surrounding work-life intersection.  Join Kristi Aho, JHU Information Technology, for tips to help you navigate privacy options with the latest technology.  With the rise of social media, parents face new and unique challenges trying to keep up with technology and protecting their children at the same time. Please take the time to attend this important workshop which will provides critical information regarding internet security.   Please bring your lunch, dessert and beverages will be provided. This session is open to all women faculty and staff, please RSVP to the owism@jhmi.edu if you plan to attend!

Leadership Program for Women Faculty

The OWISM continues to provide the Leadership Program for Women Faculty. We are presently finishing up our fourth cohort and plan to recruit for our fifth cohort in the next few weeks. Please be on the lookout of further information about the recruitment process in the next month!
