Leadership Program for Women Faculty
We have just convened our fourth cohort of the LPWF and our community of women leaders continues to grow. We have attached a list of our new participants and our cohort includes faculty from the School of Nursing, the School of Public Health, School of Engineering as well as the School of Medicine. I believe this diversity will further enrich our class and will allow women leaders to emerge across the entire University.
Emerging Women Leadership Program
We are also in the process of graduating the first cohort of the Emerging Women’s Leadership Program. Forty of our talented junior women faculty will complete the program in November. Attached is a list of our upcoming 2012 EWLP graduates. Our next cohort will be selected this fall and we are actively soliciting participants. The deadline for application is 10/15/2012. Work/Life Intersection Series
The Office of Women in Science and Medicine will hold an interactive session on “The Elementary School Dilemma” on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, from 12:00PM-1:00PM in the West Room located on the ground floor of the Turner Concourse. This is part of a series for women faculty and staff to discuss issues surrounding work-life intersection.
The session is in collaboration with the Office of Work, Life and Engagement and will be facilitated by expert Rebecca Reynolds, Director of the School Search Group. She will give an overview of the private, parochial and public school options in the Greater Baltimore region. This session is open to all women faculty, and staff. Bring your lunch. Bridging The Gap Series
The Office of Women in Science and Medicine in conjunction with the Professional Development Office- is hosting its next “Bridging the Gap” Session on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, from 12:00PM to 1:00PM in MRB 181. This session entitled “Self-Nomination-How it Can Impact Your Career” will be facilitated by Donna Vogel, Director of the Professional Development Office.
This session will provide important insights into how to promote yourself and increase your academic success at the SOM. This session is open to all women faculty. Bring your lunch. OWISM Speed Mentoring
The OWISM has initiated a new and exciting speed mentoring program. This program was piloted in the Spring and we have just had our first session. The purpose of this program is to allow our more junior women faculty, (Mentees -Instructors and Assistants) the opportunity to meet more senior women faculty, (Mentors - Associate and Full Professors) in an interactive forum to discuss various issues and concerns related to their professional careers. We plan to have 4-5 one hour sessions each year. Each hourly session will have an overarching theme, and during these sessions, mentors will have the opportunity to interact with 3 distinct mentees. Mentors will meet with each of their assigned mentees for 15 minutes and address a specific question raised by the mentee in the content area of the session. We are planning our next program on Tuesday, December 11, “Promotions” and we are still looking for additional mentors and mentees, so please contact the OWISM@jhmi.edu if you want to learn about this program!
Nominations for Society of Scholars are under way

All active and emeritus faculty are eligible to nominate former Hopkins postdoctoral fellows (including residents) who have gained distinction in their profession. Five or more years must have elapsed since their last Hopkins affiliation. The School of Medicine’s Deans Office must receive nominations by Nov. 1st. Send an e-mail to Diane Labuda at firstname.lastname@example.org if you wish to receive a nomination form, a description of the program and names of previous Society of Scholars members.

The AAMC Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar is a three and a half-day program designed for women primarily at the associate professor level and early stages of a professorial appointment. Assistant professors may be considered based on experience. The seminar is for physicians and scientists holding medical school appointments and holding leadership positions within their discipline, department or institution.
The program goal is to provide protected time to allow further honing of the knowledge and skills needed for the leadership journey in academic medicine. The seminar covers skills related to the formation and use of teams, central to effective collaboration in various mission-critical activities. Workshops feature leadership topics, such as managing conflict productively, communicating effectively, and developing productive partnerships. Career mapping sessions focus on mentoring participants’ strategic thinking about career and leadership development. CME credit is available for eligible participants.

For Your Interest
In tribute to the school of medicine’s benefactor, who revolutionized medical education, the 13th annual Mary Elizabeth Garrett Lecture will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 4 p.m. in Hurd Hall.
Cardiologist Anne Taylor, M.D., vice dean for academic affairs at Columbia University Medical Center, will present on her work with cardiovascular disease in African-Americans and women. Taylor, who did her research at The Johns Hopkins University, also will address the need and benefit of transferring principles of cardiovascular disease prevention from academia to the community. In addition, she will discuss how she has strengthened professional development for faculty at CUMC. Please plan to attend, and bring a colleague.
