Dear Women Faculty,
I would like to update you on OWISM activities.
First, I am excited to announce that Cynthia Rand is the recipient of the 2011 Vice Dean’s award for the Advancement of Women Faculty. She will receive this award at the third annual OWISM event on Tuesday March 1, 2011 in Turner Auditorium at 4:30 PM. The Keynote speaker for the event is Marin Alsop, the Musical Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The presentation and lecture will be followed by a cocktail reception in the Turner concourse. Please make all efforts to attend this upcoming event.
The OWISM is also sponsoring an upcoming session on Tuesday February 22 at noon in the SOM west room for post-doctoral students, clinical fellows, and junior faculty entitled “ Finding Passion in your Research Career.” This will be given by Leisha Emens. The Office is additionally planning a session for all women faculty “entitled “When and How to say No” on Thursday March 17, at noon –also in the SOM west room. Please see the attached brochures for further details.
The OWISM website at http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/education/women_science_medicine , continues to be updated and can provide valuable resources for your advancement .As you come across information you think useful for women faculty, please email the OWISM@jhmi.edu for inclusion on the website. Also, please let the OWISM know of any awards or honors you have received so that we may highlight that on our website in our “what’s new” section.
I recently received this link to an article from the January issue of Academic Medicine: Gender Differences in Academic Productivity and Leadership Appointments of Physicians Throughout Academic Careers by Darcy A. Reed, MD, MPH, Felicity Enders, PhD, Rachel Lindor, Martha McClees, Keith D. Lindor, MD. It demonstrates that Women's publications rates increase and actually exceed that of men in the latter stages of careers, yet women still hold fewer leadership positions than men overall. Hopefully you will find this of interest.
Lastly at our recent work/life balance session elder care was discussed. It was a wonderful session and I have attached the slide presentation to serve as a resource for faculty addressing issues in this area.
Thank you again for your support and participation in all OWISM activities. I look forward to seeing you at coming sessions and events.
