October 2013 Update

Dear Women Faculty,

This update is to provide you with information on the upcoming activities of the OWISM, as well as to make you aware of some interesting articles to read and videos to view!

Information and Conversation Sessions

The OWISM will host its second Information and Conversation session of the Fall entitled "How to Write a Perfect Bio and CV: A Mini Workshop" which will be facilitated by Linda Smith-Resar and Alison Moliterno. Learning how to write your promotional letter, the document which accompanies your CV, is absolutely critical for your academic success. This session will take place on Thursday September 12, from noon to 1pmand will be held in MRB G01. Please make the time to attend this important offering! This session is open to all SOM women faculty. Respond to owism@jhmi.edu if you plan to attend. Beverages and desserts will be provided. Please see the attached flyer for details.

OWISM Speed Mentoring

The OWISM continues its unique speed mentoring program! In each one hour session scheduled, mentees will have the opportunity to network with three to four women mentors. We will continue to have 4 sessions annually, and our next event is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 8:30-9:30am in the Arcade (Zayed 2117) Lecture Hall located next to the Chevy Chase Auditorium. This is a very special session as we are inviting our MD and MD /PhD students to come as mentees. This will give our SOM students the opportunity to network with our outstanding women faculty. Depending on how many students and faculty register-we will be assigning you a role (mentor vs mentee) on that date. We are looking for both mentors and mentees, so please contact the OWISM@jhmi.edu if you want to learn about this program and/or register! See the attached brochure for further information! Hopefully you can attend this session and network with your colleagues! Light breakfast will be provided!

Work/Life Intersection Series

The Office of Women in Science and Medicine will hold an interactive session entitled "Evidence Based Parenting" which will take place on Thursday, October 17, from 12:00PM-1:00PM in the Arcade Lecture Hall located next to the Chevy Chase Auditorium. This is part of a series for women faculty and staff to discuss issues surrounding work-life intersection. Join Anne Townsend-Chief Academic Officer for Mariposa Child Success Programs for an interactive workshop focused on the best practices in parenting. Come learn about the 5 key skills to foster strong parent -child relationships and increase your child's ability to persist in the face of difficulties. For this special session we have additionally invited our male colleagues-as raising children is a shared responsibility for our faculty! Pease take the time to attend this important workshop. Please bring your lunch, dessert and beverages will be provided. This session is open to all women faculty and staff. Please see the attached brochure and RSVP to the owism@jhmi.edu if you plan to attend!

Bridging The Gap

The OWISM invites junior women faculty and post doctoral students (both in the basic sciences and clinical areas) to attend the second lecture in the 2013 Bridging the Gap Program. This session entitled "Mentee Rules" will be facilitated by Cynthia Rand, Associate Dean for Faculty. The ability to develop successful mentee/mentor relations is critical to your long term success. Please take the time to attend this important session which will be held on Tuesday, April 2, from noon to 1pm in the Zayed Lecture Room(2117). Please reply to the owism@jhmi.edu if you plan to attend, and specify this particular session. Bring your lunch, beverages and desserts will be provided. Please see attached flyer.

Women's Leadership Panel

The OWISM is planning a special leadership panel! We are inviting women faculty and student leaders to attend this panel which will take place on Tuesday, November 12th in the Chevy Auditorium from 4-5:30 pm, followed by a brief networking reception until 6 PM.

The panel will be discussing how to obtain Leadership opportunities both in the SOM and nationally. The panel will consist of:

Julie Freischlag, Professor of Surgery, Chief, Department of Surgery

Lisa Cooper, Professor of Medicine

Julia McMillan, Professor of Pediatrics, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education

Cynthia Wolberger, Professor of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry

and

Cynthia Rand, Associate Dean of Faculty, will be our moderator.

As you are all aware- leadership roles are critically important for advancement in academic medicine, and it is imperative that our women leaders seek out and obtain these. Please come and listen as our senior women leaders discuss how they were able to create and obtain important leadership opportunities. Please make all efforts to attend this special session, and RSVP to the OWISM@jhmi.edu . I hope to see many of you there!

Save the Date for the OWISM Holiday Celebration

We will have our annual holiday celebration on December 18, 2012 from 4-6pm in the Turner Pre-Function area. This is a great opportunity to network with other women in the School of Medicine. WE will provide you with further details this wonderful event in the next few weeks!

OWISM CV Review Program

The OWISM continues to provide CV review for senior Associate Professors who anticipate promotion to Full Professor in the next 2 years. We encourage you to participate in this unique process, and get input on your CV from two Women Full Professors. This program has been very useful for women and I encourage you to send your CV if appropriate.

Leadership Program for Women Faculty

The OWISM continues to provide the Leadership Program for Women Faculty. We have just selected our fifth cohort and our first leadership session is planned for October! I would like to congratulate all those selected to participate!

Emerging Women Leadership Program

We are completing our 2nd EWLP cohort and are busy recruiting for our third Emerging Women's Leadership Program. The deadline for application is October 15, 2013. Please see the attached brochure and application-and consider applying to this innovative and important skills building program!
