This drawing by medical illustrator David Rini, an associate professor
in the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine, appeared around
the world when the Iranian conjoined twins Laden and Laleh Bijani
were separated and died in Singapore in July. It is one of four
illustrations (the others show the fused brains and a planned vein
graft), all of which were done in a matter of hours to meet a press
conference deadline. To produce them, Rini relied on films, photos,
3-D computer models and a conversation with Ben Carson, one of the
sisters' neurosurgeons.
"Because of the Bijani twins' complex anatomy and also because
millions around the world were trying to comprehend the struggle
they faced, it was gratifying to know that my work could help others
understand a challenging medical topic," says Rini, a specialist
in neurosurgical illustration and not incidentally, a portrait artist.
In late July, Rini's illustrations won a certificate of merit at
the annual meeting of the Association of Medical Illustrators in
New Orleans.
