Mary Carole Kirkpatrick had been on the job in Human Resources but a few months when a nasty sore throat got the best of her. She asked a colleague to direct her to the employee health clinic. The response, that there was only an occupational injury clinic, surprised Kirkpatrick, who had assumed that in such a large health care institution there would be a designated place for employees to turn to if they’re not feeling well.

How Sweet It Is

For the 18th consecutive year, the Johns Hopkins Hospital has earned the top spot in U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of American hospitals, placing first in three medical specialties and very high in 12 others. To earn the overall No. 1 spot, the Hospital edged out Mayo Clinic, accumulating 30 points in 15 of 16 categories. Hopkins also ranked first in Ear, Nose and Throat, Rheumatology and Urology. It placed No. 2 in Geriatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology and Psychiatry; No. 3 in Cancer, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Endocrinology, Heart and Heart Surgery, and Respiratory Disorders; No. 6 in Kidney Disease and Orthopedics and No. 15 in Rehabilitation. U.S. News analyzed data on more than 5,400 medical centers to produce this year’s specialty rankings.
