Dining Room Re-Do

Hopkins Hospital’s Main Dining Room soon will be completely renovated and redesigned. Plans call for open, brightly lit spaces, comfortable seating and vendors like Subway, Nobel Roman’s Pizza, Einstein Bros. Bagels and Flamer’s Burgers. A 1960s original, the Main Dining Room currently features a dimly lit, cluttered serving space and crowded, noisy dining area. “Our employees deserve better,” says VP of General Services Ken Grant.

Cops on Wheels

Spring has sprung and with it have come the Segways. Members of the Special Response Unit are patrolling the East Baltimore campus on these so-called human transporters. “For quick response and easy mobility, Segways have more flexibility than four-wheel-drive vehicles,” says Director of Security Ruth LaFontaine. “They also bring the SRU staff into closer contact with people.”

Neighborhood Shuttle

A shuttle currently runs from the East Baltimore campus to Canton and Fells Point. The morning schedule begins at 6:30 a.m. with a pick-up at Aliceanna and Chester and ends with the last drop-off at Jefferson and Wolfe at 9:15 a.m. The evening schedule begins at 4:30 p.m. with the first pick-up at Jefferson and Wolfe and ends at 7:45 p.m. with the last drop-off at Washington and Gough.

“The areas south of campus are housing more and more of the Hopkins population,” says George Economas, director of Parking and Transportation Services. “They do not have the benefit of mass transit services there, and we want to try and accommodate our students and staff.” The new service is being piloted from March 20 to June 20.
