Prepaid Legal Services

I read your article concerning the Prepaid Legal Services (“A Will and a Way,” November). I thought, what a great idea and such a blessing, until I read further only to find it was being offered solely to hospital employees. How unfair! There are so many of us who cannot afford a lawyer for things such as making a will or having a contract looked over. Help me understand why this service is not being offered to everyone.

We'll keep this in mind in the future. It is important to note, however, that JHU and JHH are two separate employers with separate benefits packages. Each of us has benefits that the other doesn't.

Christ Statue

I wanted to tell someone I know who is being treated for cancer at Johns Hopkins about the Christ statue, so I did a little research and discovered your article (“A Provocative Icon,” December 2003).

I'm not a very religious person, but I hope you never remove the statue. I first saw it about 20 years ago when we took our infant daughter to the Wilmer Eye Institute to have a stent put in her tear duct.

Early on the first morning, we scurried over to the hospital with an infant who hadn't been fed. We were a little frightened about her having to be anesthetized for the procedure, even though my wife is an R.N. We found the entrance to the rotunda, and as soon we entered, we saw the Christ statue, surrounded by poinsettias. We stood there frozen for a few moments. The fear quickly left me as I read the inscription on the base of the statue [“Come unto me all ye who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.”].

We hurried on to the operating room, and the procedure was successful. We met other parents at Wilmer who were there as a last resort—some with children who would never see the Christ statue.
