The following letter was sent to the Office of Public Affairs at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center where the late James Wenz served as chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Wenz and his wife Lidia, a pediatric psychiatrist on the faculty until 2001, were killed in an automobile accident on Jan. 20.

The families of James and Lidia Wenz would like to thank you for all the love and comfort you gave to us at our time of deepest sorrow. James and Lidia brought so much to everyone they touched in their short lives on earth. They were natural teachers that built their lives on enthusiasm, joy, curiosity, patience and above all, love. We cannot express the overwhelming comfort to hear the stories each of you shared with us about our beloved James and Lidia. We all were blessed to have been able to share moments in their incredible lives and love story.

We can only hope that these reflections and memories will live on in each of our hearts and minds so that we may give as they did. They would encourage us not to follow their footsteps, but to branch out and make a difference on our own. We know that each of you touched their lives and made a difference to them as well. When we think of James and Lidia, it is of an aura of happiness.

Be encouraged and comforted in the knowledge that their children, Adrianna and James, are well. They are loved and cared for by both families. James and Lidia shared a passion to make Johns Hopkins part of their lives both professionally and personally. We will carry this tradition by keeping you informed of their children as they grow and mature.

We would like to share a quote taken from a letter we found authored by Lidia: “We fall short if we do not examine and learn from the events of our lives. We believe that there is a reason for most occurrences, and if that purpose is not clear, certainly a lesson can always be learned .... I encourage you to take the highest road and the broadest view."

The families of James and Lidia Wenz

The families are planning to make a memory book for the Wenz children. Those wishing to send stories or photos of James and Lidia, or contribute to a fund in honor of them or their children, can call the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, 410-516-6617.
