March 21 was a day of whoops and grins as School of Medicine seniors
learned which residency programs they'll enter after graduation this
spring. Although participants in the National Resident Matching Program
can find out via the World Wide Web if they've successfully matched
to a program, Hopkins continues with its traditional group ritual, in
which students get together to open their white envelopes with news
of their matches. Pictured is Edward Garcia, who will head to Massachusetts
this summer to begin residencies in internal medicine and anesthesiology
at Mt. Auburn Hospital and Brigham & Women's. Garcia, a West Point
graduate, served in the Gulf War and Panama, and worked for the Department
of Defense before deciding he wanted to become a doctor.
