Dr. Shafiq graduated magna cum laude from Aga Khan University in Karachi (Pakistan). Following the completion of internal medicine residency training at Emory University, where he received distinctions in teaching as well as in quality improvement, he joined Mayo Clinic as an Assistant Professor of Medicine where he worked for a year before moving to Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Shafiq''s clinical and academic appointments are split between Division of General Internal Medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Collaborative Inpatient Medicine Service at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Dr. Shafiq has research interests in diseases of the chest, ranging from pulmonary infections to pulmonary hypertension. He also has a strong interest in medical education. He was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 2012.
