Bio
Biography
Dr. Manson has had a distinguished career in craniofacial and reconstructive surgery, with over 435 peer reviewed articles and over $10 million in research grants, awards and endowments to his credit. He has served as president of three of the six important professional organizations for plastic surgery in North America. His principle contributions include establishing original classification and treatment for frontal bone fractures; classification of midface, orbital and nasoethmoidal fractures; and classification and algorithm for the treatment of facial defects from skin cancer.
Dr. Manson completed his plastic surgery training at Johns Hopkins and has been on the full time faculty since that time. He was promoted to professor in 1987. He has been director of the Plastic Surgery Service at the University of Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services Systems (Shock Trauma Unit) from 1978-1996 and is internationally known for his work in facial injury repair and rigid internal fixation. He authored many of the approaches to current open reduction of facial fracture repairs, designed rigid fixation systems and was one of two individuals who convinced surgeons internationally of these concepts. He developed systems for aesthetic reconstruction of facial defects from trauma and cancer and their principles have become a fundamental part of the reconstructive approach of surgeons around the world.
