Awards and Recognition

In recent years, organizations and leaders in Hopkins Medicine have been recognized for their efforts to build a more diverse and inclusive environment. Our goal is to take their successes and spread them throughout Hopkins.

On Sept. 26, 2007, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission gave the Johns Hopkins Health System a Freedom to Compete Award in recognition of four Hopkins programs that improve job opportunities. The award, given to 18 organizations over its first three years, recognizes excellence in equal employment opportunity practices that the Commission believes can be emulated by other employers or organizations. Recognition by Hispanic Business
Hispanic Business magazine has ranked the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as one of the top medical schools for Hispanic students to attend. In 2007 Johns Hopkins placed eighth and in 2005 it was second only to Stanford University. The magazine has cited Hopkins’ efforts to support students through one-on-one mentoring, as well as its efforts to recruit and retain minority medical students.

“Diversity also brings a diversity of ideas.  That’s a hot bed for creativity, when you have new ideas, in the workplace, in research, when you start bringing new ideas.  That’s what we’re about- creativity.”

-Chi Dang, MD, Ph.D.
Vice Dean for Research
