How the program works

Each patient will meet individually with members of our team, which include board-certified internists and gastroenterologists, exercise physiologists, and a licensed nutritionist and counselor. This self-pay program is best for men and women who are interested in losing approximately 20-30 pounds and who have a body mass index (BMI) of between 27.5 and 40. [Check your BMI using this calculator.]

In addition to achieving long-term weight loss, the Johns Hopkins Concierge Weight Loss Program also provides an option to help individuals temporarily lose a moderate amount of weight quickly and safely. We designed a novel endoscopic procedure to help individuals successfully jumpstart their weight loss efforts, and—when combined with the other comprehensive tools in the program—achieve lasting results.

Overview of services

The Johns Hopkins Concierge Weight Loss Program includes the following services:

  • Initial evaluation with a board-certified gastroenterologist
  • Dietary/nutritional consultation with licensed nutritionist
  • Exercise physiology screening, including metabolic fitness and body composition testing
  • Personalized, comprehensive exercise program
  • Outpatient endoscopic procedure for short-term weight loss
  • Behavior modification session with licensed clinical counselor
  • Follow-up evaluation

Initial evaluation
As a first step in the Johns Hopkins Concierge Weight Loss Program, you will meet with our board-certified gastroenterologist. After a medical examination, you will review your medical history with the physician, including any illnesses and your family’s medical background, and your weight loss goals. You will also discuss the weight loss program in further detail, including any questions you may have.

Dietary/nutritional consultation
Our licensed nutritionist and certified nutrition specialist will meet one-on-one with you for an initial nutritional counseling session that can last from one to two hours. During this consultation, you will review your current eating habits and discuss tools and tips for integrating a healthy diet into your life. Our nutritionist will also teach you about specific foods and nutrients and recommend lifestyle changes specifically for you. Several other nutritional and dietary services are available for additional costs, including customized grocery shopping tours, cooking demonstrations, “pantry rehab” sessions, and group workshops.

Exercise physiology screening and exercise program
All program participants will be screened by our certified clinical exercise physiologists for body composition, resting metabolic rate and metabolic fitness. Metabolic testing provides an accurate measurement of calories burned at rest and during exercise by evaluating maximum aerobic capacity (also known as VO2 max), during exercise on a treadmill or bicycle.

Afterwards, you will have a follow-up visit to review the screening results, ask questions, and complete a one-on-one supervised exercise session at our state-of-the-art fitness center. You will also receive a personalized, comprehensive exercise program that you can safely follow under medical supervision at our fitness facility at Green Spring Station or at home.

Outpatient endoscopic procedure
If you are interested in temporarily losing a moderate amount of weight quickly and safely, our board-certified gastroenterologists can perform a simple, painless procedure called upper endoscopy (also known as an EGD) in which botulinum toxin (Botox®) is injected into the stomach muscle. This injection induces a feeling of prolonged fullness, which can result in moderate weight loss for approximately 3-6 months.

Behavior modification session
One important part of successfully losing weight is identifying potentially unhealthy behaviors and learning how to change them. With the help of our licensed clinical counselor in an individual session, you will identify causes and factors of potentially unhealthy behaviors and set goals and strategies for practicing new, healthy behaviors and adopting positive lifestyle changes to help you lose weight and keep it off.

Follow-up evaluation
Upon completion of the Johns Hopkins Concierge Weight Loss Program, you will meet once with our internist and weight management specialist to evaluate your progress in meeting your weight loss goals. During this meeting, you will also have the opportunity to discuss any questions and develop a plan for sustained weight management.
