Group Classes

Diabetes has been called the ultimate experiment in self-government. The Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Diabetes Center Education Program offers patients the knowledge and skills to control their disease. A dedicated health-care team, including physicians, nurse educators, dietitians and mental health counselors, helps to make glycemic control a part of a full productive life.

Patients may enroll in programs to learn more about diabetes. More than 2,500 individuals have participated in our classes; some are newly diagnosed, while others have lived with diabetes for many years. Classes are conducted in a relaxed, small-group setting and family members or a support person are invited to share the experience.

The Diabetes Center offers three programs. The 3-hour program called "Nutrition and Lifestyle" provides a basic overview on how lifestyles can affect diabetes. The 1-day program called "Survival Skills for Diabetes" provides patients newly diagnosed with diabetes an opportunity to learn more about the disease and to see a health-care team which can help them make smart choices. The 2-day program called "Comprehensive Diabetes Education" provides patients with a review of diabetes, personalized diet, coping skills for emergencies, daily stress management techniques, and much more.
