Children's Center Patient Visits White House and
Disney World
- Champions Across America. Sixteen-year-old
Columbia, Maryland resident Scott Summe has been selected to represent
Johns Hopkins Children's Center patients during the national Children's
Miracle Network broadcast. As one of 50 children-one from each
state-participating in the Children's Miracle Network's Champions
Across America program, Scott and his family will visit Washington,
DC on Wednesday April 3 for lunch on Capitol Hill with the U.S.
Senators followed by a tour of the White House and a visit with
the President and First Lady. Then Scott and his family will fly
to Disney World in Orlando, Florida for the videotaping of the
National Children's Miracle Network Broadcast which airs locally
on WMAR-TV2 on Sunday June 3, 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
Born with Crouzon syndrome, an inherited condition that causes
the skull bones to fuse before birth, Scott has undergone 21
surgeries and faces more in the future. Although his appearance
often causes stares, Scott with the support of his family, meets
the world on his terms. Recently, for example, he competed in
a cross country race. He raised his arms in triumph, announcing,
"I beat three people!" And unfazed by the 46 others who finished
ahead of him. Scott speaks at local elementary schools, using
candid descriptions of his experience in coping with Crouzon's
to inspire kids to face their own challenges.
The Champions Across America program is sponsored by the Independent
Order of Foresters, a proud supporter of CMN. The Children's
Miracle Network is a non-profit organization that helps to raise
money for affiliated children's hospitals, including Johns Hopkins
Children's Center.
