Scientist: Research Projects: Mutant Mice Being Characterized

Availability of mutant mice to the public scientific community:

The information contained on this page was last updated in June 2004. No corrections or additions will be made to this site from that date forward. For more current information on the mutations listed here, as well as many newer mutations and deviants, please refer to the New Models page of The Jackson Laboratory's Craniofacial Resource website found at www.jax.org/cranio/new.html. Questions and requests should be addressed to faces@jax.org.

All of the strains on this page are now being offered to members of the scientific community who are interested in craniofacial abnormalities. Living colonies will be available during the dates posted for each mutant strain. Many colonies will be available after that time via recovery from cryopreserved sperm. When an investigator expresses interest in a particular mutant, 2 breeder pairs will be provided as soon as possible, but the breeding colony will be maintained only during the 2-month time period. If additional mice were needed after that time, they would have to be recovered from cryopreserved sperm for a fee to the Cryopreservation Resource. Photographs of mutants will remain on the public side indefinitely, even if taken by an investigator, or taken off the shelf. No indication will be made as to whether or not a particular mutant has been requested by an independent investigator.

Interested parties may contact Jackson Labs at faces@jax.org.

Recent Updates: The following mice have either been added or have recent changes.

Mutant Mice Being Characterized

C57BL/6J-Nm3099

The phenotype of this dominant mutation is a mildly shortened nose. Initial hearing tests, conducted on three mutants and two controls, produced normal results. Both male and female mutants are fertile. This strain is now only available through cryo. recovery.

More Details

C57BL/6J-Nm3140

The phenotype of this dominant mutation consists of short front legs, small ear pinnae, and a square, fat body. Initial hearing tests, conducted on four mutants, produced normal results. The mutant in this picture is a ten week old female. This strain is now only available through cryo. recovery

More Details

C57BL/6J-nm3244

The phenotype of this heritable mutation consists of a shortened nose. Results of initial hearing exams on 2 mutants and 2 controls were normal. The mutant in this picture is a 15 week old male.

More Details

B6;A-nm3014

The phenotype of this heritable mutation is a shortened nose. The mutant in this picture is a 31 week old female. This strain was discarded due to the subtlety of its phenotype and is now only available through cryo. recovery.

More Details

NOD.ALR-(D17Mit16-D17Mit10 )/Lt-nm3283

The phenotype of this heritable mutation is a shortened nose. The mutant in this picture is a 10 week old female. This strain has been discarded due to the subtlety of its phenotype and is now only available through cryo. recovery.

More Details

CXB5/ByJ-nm2886

The phenotype of this heritable mutation is quite variable. It can consist of any combination of low set, small and/or lopped ear pinnae and can effect the ear pinnae on both or either side of the skull. The phenotype can also vary in severity. Results from initial hearing tests were normal. The mutant in this picture is a 29 week old female.

More Details

C57BL/6J-Slc30a4<lm>/J-nm3305

The phenotype of this heritable mutation is a shortened nose. Initial hearing tests found one mutant to be deaf in both ears. The mutant in this picture is a 12 week old female.

More Details

B6.129P2-Apoa1<tm1Unc>/J-nm2834

Mutants with this heritable phenotype have short noses. Results from initial hearing tests were normal. The mutant in this picture is a 33 week old female. This strain is now only available through cryo. recovery.

More Details

B6CBA-Tg(HDexon1)62Gpb/1J-nm3250

The phenotype of this heritable mutation consists of a small overall body size and a short, rounded nose. Initial hearing tests were conducted on two mutants; results were normal. Eye morphology was examined on two mutants; no obvious abnormalities were observed. The mutant in this picture is a 5 week old male. This strain is now only available through cryo. recovery.

More Details

C57BL/6J-Lyst<bg-J>/J-nm3366

The phenotype of this heritable mutant is a short nose. The mutant in this picture is a 7 week old male.

More Details

B6.129P2-Pltp<tm1Jia>/J-nm3382

The phenotype of this heritable mutation is a short nose. Initial eye examinations revealed no obvious abnormalities. The mutant is this picture is a 19 week old female.

More Details

The phenotype of this deviant consists of a short nose, and wide set eyes. The mice in this picture are seven week old males.

More Details

DBA/2J-nm3525

The phenotype of this dominant mutation consists of large eyes and a short nose. Initial eye examinations completed on the original mutant, only found abnormalities consistent with background strain and advanced age. The mutant in this picture is a fifty-three week old male.
