The Hopkins Access Line, HAL, is a consultation and referral service
offered by Johns Hopkins Medicine. HAL's toll-free number is operational
24 hours a day, seven days a week, and was created in response to
the growing needs of physicians to reach Hopkins physicians quickly.
HAL provides opportunities for practicing physicians and faculty
to assist one another in the diagnosis and care of patients.
As a physician, your call will be received by a HAL service representative,
referred to as a "Hopkins expediter." Each of our expediters has
access to Hopkins physicians' schedules, on-call lists, and telephone
and pager numbers -- all of the numbers necessary to reach the physician
promptly. If you wish to speak with a specific physician and he
or she is unavailable, the expediter will direct you to an available
specialist or arrange for the requested physician to return your
call.
Since HAL is for physicians only, incoming calls placed directly
by patients will not be accepted. Patients should use our appointment
service lines, 1-443-287-6585 (fax: 1-410-502-5838) for U.S. calls outside the Baltimore
area, and 410-955-5464 for local and international calls. To make

The HAL expediter is responsible for every call being completed
to your satisfaction. The expediter is available to help you with
any needed arrangements.
If a patient requires transportation, HAL expediters can help make
the necessary arrangements through Johns Hopkins Lifeline. Appropriately
trained Lifeline personnel can provide ground-based transportation
within a wide radius of Hopkins Hospital. If necessary, air transport
and critical-care services can be provided.
Through HAL, physicians may request information about Johns Hopkins
seminars or Continuing Medical Education programs. HAL representatives
have current lecture listings and can facilitate physicians' registration.
